The "Best" is rather subjective - I may say one is great, but someone else may say otherwise.

AVC have a summary report on its website http://www.av-comparatives.org/ (- on the top-right) of the AV product which done overall weighted-best in its tests.
Other than that, I strongly advise you try products out before you purchase them to see which you like best. Most have a 30day trial.

I find it surprising nobody mentioned Norton Antivirus 2010. That's still the top-selling antivirus on the planet and the last two releases (2009 and 2010) have been much lighter on system resources, despite what you might hear from other people. No, we're not in 2003 anymore...

Many sites have it available as a free download, including this one:
Norton Antivirus Free Download

More Norton free trials here (Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security):
Norton Free Trials

Good luck!

I would recommend ESET...It is one of the best I have ever used... I feel its better than Avast,Norton or any other anti-virus software...

I am not sure who makes this. Do you haver a link?

The first requirement is that the AV run well on your system and is compatible with other programs you use. That is the reason one should always trial the various AVs.

For me if one runs well then the detection rate is the next highest priority. AV Comparatives provides the best and most meaningful tests in my view. There are different type tests, but the on-demand and dynamic tests are the most important ones to me.

As I have examined the results of AVG tests I have concluded that Avira is a top tier AV, and have pretty well settled on it. Others that I consider and will use are Avast, Norton, and F-Secure. My reason for leaving out Kaspersky is that it has not played well on my systems for almost a year, and I have neither the skill nor the patience to try to get it all straight. If KIS ran well on my computer it would probably be the one I would use, and have used for several years until recently.

For free AVs my own choice is Avast as it runs well, and has a very good detection rate.

Other good ones have been mentioned, and trials are the only way to determine the best one for you.

I would not run any without MBAM running in real time. I know of cases where rogues have penetrated top AVs, and it took MBAM to find and remove them.

I am not an expert or even close, but those are my own thoughts.

Regards,
Jerry

I actually have NIS 2011 on my laptop and MSE 2.0 on my desktop. Both work fine and I have had no infections on either machine. But I have also tried Comodo Internet Security and it worked fine too. So try them out and just be careful and do your scans.

Though it may not be the best, it's right up there and I'm talking about Avira
Premium. For 26.00 dollars a year that's not bad. The full blown version is even
better. I believe it's called Avira Security Suite. According to this site, F Secure
has come in as the overall choice. I myself really like Avira Prem for what I do.
Hasn't failed me yet. NOD 32 is right up there as well.

Few months back I was also in the same come condition, however, after doing a long research on antivirus, firewall and other security appliance I decided to opt for security appliance from WatchGuard which protects my systems from antivirus, malware and other web threats. I haven’t faced any security problem since I started using this product. I will recommend you to opt for the same.

A lot of people are happy with BitDefender, it is on top on very popular sites like <edited by admin: reason: the site you linked is not a serious one>. Personally, i have tested and i don't like pop-ups.

I haveused McAfee paid license, but now I am running AVG free edition and is working great.

Also, at my office i use Norton Antivirus corporate license and is doing fine, but i wouldn't spend money on it.

I purchased F-Secure partially due to the AVC selecting it as their top product of the year. I used GData prior to that.

F-Secures spam plugin (fsscmso.dll) for Outlook does not work at all with Office 2010. In fact it crashes my Outlook at program startup about 1 out of every 10 times. Even though spam control was disabled within F-Secure, I still had to disable the plugin within Office. I looked at F-Secures support knowledgebase and it is sparse and their forums have no useful information. GData's support is worse, but at least their program doesn't crash my Outlook.

I am really disappointed in this product and in AVC's rating system.

EDIT: Another knock against F-Secure was how slow they were in adding the rogue AV "Windows Stability Center" to their definitions. All the top Anti-Virus companies were able to detect it a whole day before F-Secure added it.
