MBAM vs AV

The quesion was raised on Wilder's as to whether MBAM alone was enough for adequate security.

Most say an AV is needed but some want proof that an AV would catch malware that MBAM would not.

I do notice that anti-malware applications such as MBAM or SAS are not tested by AV Commparatives.

Is there a reason why MBAM could not be tested along with the AVs?
The question is concerned with the technical issues and not the question of vendor approval. Thanks.

Are there any tests that could shed some light on the question?

Regards,

Jerry

I'm just another forum member but I would suggest you at least use a free anti-virus scanner. The best scanner, just scanner, is Windows Security Essentials. I base that opinion on the AV-Comparative facts -all of them.

I own Malwarebyte's paid version. It has missed things other scanners I've tried have detected. Currently I'm testing the newest Trustport and it found things nothing else has. I double checked for false possitives. Trustport isn't free though.

Do not use just Malwarebyte's.

Hi Newad,

I have not had an infection ever on my machines. But I also believe that one should run a good AV alongside MBAM ir similar application.

Thanks for the input. I wonder if the difference in the way AM detects and handles malware vs AV makes it more difficult to test the AM?

Jerry

Hi there & Merry Christmas. First of all, As in still it's early days, MBAM has shown it's great potential to dealt with Malwares of modern days. Yet MBAM can't be put in front as your primary defense (Not just yet). MBAM is a great little tool to have in your back pocket, It can be used better as secondary tool, at best, as on-demand scanner ONLY (e.g. Spybot S&D). One must have a solid AV (Suggested : Avast!, Bitdefender, Norton, Avira) for front-line protection. Good Luck & have great New Year to everyone, CHEERS!
